Fall Furnace Maintenance for a Safe & Cozy Home

September 8th, 2017

As the weather cools and the school year starts back up, we can all feel fall right around the corner. Every season, there are different tasks that homeowners should complete in order to ensure comfort, safety, and savings during that part of the year. Fall is no different.

By checking off these fall furnace maintenance tasks for a safe and cozy home, your family will be ready for the cold weather and holiday season ahead.

Fall Furnace Maintenance

  1. Schedule Furnace Maintenance

Your heating and cooling system should be checked twice a year. Once in the spring before the swelter of summer, and once in the fall before the chill of winter. Heating systems, such as furnaces and fireplaces that go unchecked are not only inefficient, they can be dangerous as well. Learn about the dangers of carbon monoxide, aka the silent killer.

The older your HVAC system, the more important regular tune-ups are. Additionally, many manufacturer’s warranties require regular annual tune-ups for their warranties to remain in effect.

By scheduling professional service done during these interim seasons, your system is able to withstand the daily usage necessary to keep your family safe and comfortable in the more extreme-weather months.

Just like with a car, you’d never wait until it broke down to have it serviced. With any system that we count on, regular check-ups are essential to performance and safety. Your furnace or boiler needs annual tune-ups, and it’s best to do it in the fall before the first really cold day of the year.

Here’s what you can expect from a professional furnace inspection:

  • Carbon Monoxide
  • Thermostat Testing
  • Ignition System
  • Exhaust System
  • Supply/Return Temperature Differential
  • Safety & Control Circuits
  • Heat Exchanger
  • Clean Air Filter
  • Cleaning & Lubrication
  • Gas Pressure
  • Blower Motor
  • Electrical Wiring
  • Combustion Vents
  • Interior & Exterior Cleaning

Service Champions’ trained technicians perform a 60-90-minute precision tune-up and professional cleaning. Check out our full 21-Point Furnace Maintenance Checklist.

No matter what type of heating system you have, don’t ignore annual maintenance. It will prevent a sudden breakdown on a cold, winter day and will save you money on energy bills while extending the system’s useful life. Learn the benefits of fall furnace maintenance.

  1. DIY Furnace Maintenance

In addition to professional maintenance once a year, it’s also important to conduct some basic DIY maintenance of your own.

  • Clean/change the air filter every 30-60 days. Never wait more than 90 days to replace your filter. Clean air filters improve airflow and energy efficiency while also helping to clean and filter your indoor air. You can usually find your filter in a pull-out access door near the front of the furnace.
  • Keep all of your vents and registers open and unobstructed. Closing vents and registers can cause unnecessary buildup in your ductwork, which can cause duct leaks and other inefficiencies. Make sure there are no rugs, furniture, or other objects blocking any of your vents.
  • Seal gaps and cracks around doors and windows. Another way to save on rising energy bills during the chilly months is to ensure that your doors and windows have been properly sealed, weather-stripped, or caulked as necessary. By keeping the cold in and the heat out, your heater won’t have to work so hard to maintain comfort in the home. You can also consider adding shades or blinds for extra insulation.
  1. DIY Furnace Safety

The number one danger of a failing heating system is a carbon monoxide leak—one big reason why you should schedule heating maintenance early.

  • Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the home and outside of each sleeping area. CO detectors should be installed in all the major areas of your home just like smoke alarms. Make sure to test all of your CO and smoke detectors every 30 days.
  • Maintain a minimum 3-foot clearance around your furnace, fireplace, and other heat sources. Keep the area around heaters unobstructed and free from any flammable items. Teach children that these areas are strict “no play” zones.
  • Make sure there is nothing combustible within 6 inches of your ventilation pipe. Periodically inspect your vent pipes to make sure there is nothing obstructing them, such as leaves, snow, or bird nests. All fuel-burning systems need ventilation for proper safety.
  • Never store paint, chemicals, glue, gasoline, or any other combustible material anywhere near your furnace.
